Nov. meeting rescheduled

11/17/2008 18:30

Due to unavailability of several members of the Executive Board, the November meeting has been postponed until Monday, November 17. Venue is still Pat G's house.

VLL is open for business

They've removed the displaced threshold for runway 9, so 9-27 is now 3550' both ways. Henceforth, feel free to have that second helping when winds are out of the east.

VLL Closed 9/30 - 10/2

Oakland-Troy will be closed mid-week for runway maintenance. From the official notice:

"This will confirm reports that you may have heard concerning the [threshold relocation] airport safety project. The project is anticipated to start on or about September 30 and to be concluded by October 2, 2008, weather permitting.

The extensive nature of the project will necessitate complete closure of the airfield during the time construction equipment is actively working."

This supersedes previous reports that the runway would have limited availability by arrangement with airport management. Not so - VLL is shutting down completely Tue-Thu. If you want to use 90B those days, we'd appreciate a volunteer to move it to the DET ramp on Monday. Contact any of the Club officers to make arrangements.

New TAF format starting 11/5

Beginning November 5 at 18:00Z, 32 major airports in USA (including DTW and CLE) will be issuing 30-hour Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs). Obviously, the TAF format must change to accommodate the extended forecasts. What isn't so obvious is that the format of all TAFs will change at that time, regardless of whether the issuing airport is providing 30-hour forecasts. Details, examples, and so forth at http://aviationweather.gov/notice/taf30.php. Take a look at the last two pages of the .doc link (http://aviationweather.gov/static/docs/30-Hour_TAF.doc) for a list of airports which will be doing 30-hour forecasting, and a good side-by-side comparison of the old and new formats.

Thanks to Art M. for the information!

Hey, if it's raining, we won't have to rinse off the planes. :)

General Membership Meeting

A bit of news, a wish list, and a reminder

It appears our recent site makeover is drawing attention. Last week our club was listed in StudentFlyingClub.com's club directory. We didn't ask to be included; they happened upon EFC.com and decided it'd be a good addition to their directory. So here's a shout-out back to them, and you might want to check out their site, as there's quite a bit of interesting stuff there. This is a good excuse to add a "Resources" page; watch for that in the near future.

Still looking for photos, articles, and the like to put on the website, especially material from the early days of the Club. Doesn't have to be digital; we can scan and return just about anything on paper.

Also, remember that you can subscribe to be notified by e-mail whenever new items are posted here. Log in, go to "My Account" (at top right), then "Subscriptions", then "Content Types". Check the notifications you want to receive, then "Save". Checking "Event" and "Story" will cover just about all of the important and timely posts.

PTK Air Fair

08/17/2008 00:00
08/17/2008 16:00

Oakland Co. Airport's annual open house. Pancake breakfast, lunch (which may or may not involve pancakes), and lots of exhibits, including Yankee Air Museum's B-25. http://www.airfairocia.org

Kit-Mustang Fly-in at VLL

08/23/2008
08/24/2008

Mustang Aeronautics is having an open house and demos of their kit aircraft at VLL, with BBQ lunch. Apparently the factory is nearby, and they'll be running shuttles from the airport for factory tours. The Midget Mustang and Mustang II are slick little planes; this sounds like it'll be interesting and fun!

Welcome!
